The MARILAG Top

The MARILAG Top

The MARILAG top’s upper bodice is upcycled from a headwrap with beaded detailing by Bagobo artisans, furnished with 100% cotton Ikat waistband handwoven by Ifugao artisans, designed and sewn altogether by Cheska Ibasan.

FIT:

Our muse — Chelsea Sanson — is 5'1" tall with bust that measures 36 inches. This top has adjustable strings and best fits busts measuring 36 to 45 inches.

IKAT:

Ikat is a traditional weaving and resist-dyeing technique found in the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and other parts of the world.

The Banton Burial Cloth (c. 1200 - 1400 A.D.) found in Banton, Romblon is the oldest surviving specimen of textile and Ikat textile in the Philippines. It is also the earliest known Ikat warp textile in Southeast Asia.

For our collection, we featured this non-traditional print that employed the art of Ikat with the aid of Ifugao artisans — one of the Pinoy communities that creates Ikat along with T’boli, B’laan, Bagobo, Mandaya, and Cordillera artisans.

Now one of the most highly commercialized prints, Ikat has been adapted into the different parts of the world and was later absorbed by fast fashion as “boho”.
